Explanatory Notes (29 June 2007)

This finding aid is for Volume 20 of the deed books of Essex County, Massachusetts, as shown at http:
//salemdeeds.com/historic.asp. While most of the deed book entries are in fact deeds (of several types), some
other documents are also recorded, including depositions and powers of attorney.  The notes below discuss what
names are included, what spellings are used, how wives' maiden names are treated, and a number of other
issues.  Please read the notes to make best use of this finding aid, and note that is not to be taken as a set of
deed abstracts or a complete index to all names included in the deed books.

The listed names fall into in either of two categories:  (1) the main deed grantor (or other principal individual such
as someone granting a power of attorney or providing testimony), or (2) the name of someone else referred to in
the document, with a cross-reference to the name of the main deed grantor.  Names in the second category may
be grantees (in which case they are identified as such, with a cross-reference to the grantor), wives who are
giving up their right of dower, or simply someone else of genealogical significance, such as a named parent or
sibling of the grantor.  The entry at the cross-reference will provide further detail.

The spelling of the names in the list is usually the most common form that actually appears in each record; it is not
unusual for multiple spellings to occur even for the same person within a particular deed.  Selection of which
spelling to use can be something of a judgment call, so look for alternative spellings in the list.  Cross-references
to alternative spellings are not included, though they may be added in the future.

Names appearing in land descriptions (e.g., abutting landowners or former owners of the specified property) are
not generally included in this list, with exceptions for people whose genealogical relationships are specified in the
individual deeds.  Property locations are also not specified at a level of detail finer than the town, and in some
cases the location is not readily apparent based just on the one deed.  Check the original record for additional
details about the property locations.

Dates appearing in the list follow the form of the original record.  If double-dating occurs in the original, for
example, then it will be used here as well.

Page numbers refer to the starting page of the recorded document.  It is common, however, for deeds to cover a
second and even a third page, almost always the very next page in the book.  Those few exceptions where a deed
continues onto some other page are noted.

Most deeds are not separately identified by type, and they may include deeds of sale, deeds of gift, mortgages,
indentures, or other contracts.  Testimony and powers of attorney are, however, separately identified.

For those many deeds in which a wife gave up her right of dower or otherwise consented to a husband's
transaction, the wife's name appears both with the husband's and as separate entries under her married name,
her maiden name (if known), and previous married names (if known).  Maiden names for women who married are
always included in parentheses, as are previous married names.  These names are sometimes inferred rather
than stated explicitly stated; check the original record for clarity.  Maiden names for single women are not
enclosed by parentheses.  At the entries listing both husband and wife, occupations and other identifying
information will refer just to the husband, though wives presumably were from the same place most of the time.

It is important to note that there may be long gaps between the date of the transaction being recorded and the
actual date of recording.  To take one extreme example, the deed for grantor Thomas Whittier and Ruth his wife
(Volume 20, page 58) was recorded on 9 Sep 1707, but the corresponding transaction occurred on 9 Jun 1655,
more than fifty years earlier.

Finally, please note than any finding aid like this one is subject to transcription errors, errors of omission, errors of
inference, etc.  If you discover an error, please notify me at the email address appearing at the top of all pages on
this website.
